Indiana Sentinels Training Camp: Day Three Recap
We have officially passed the halfway point of training camp, and the on-ice product is looking stronger by the day.
Day three of training camp was yet another two practice and one off-ice session day. In the morning, the guys hit the ice and worked on a lot of systems work. Defensive zone coverage, line rushes and odd man breaks were a big part of the morning skate.
With opening night exactly one week away, it is imperative that the players not only know the systems but are able to have some familiarity and create chemistry with one another so they are a well-oiled machine when the puck drops next Friday.
Last year a big problem area for the Sentinels was in the defensive zone and they were getting caught in their zone far too long which allowed an abundance of scoring chances for the opponent. It is clear that there is an emphasis on changing that tune this year.
Newcomer Ryan Brow will be a major reason for the Sentinels upgrade in the defensive zone. “I expected Everett to be a very structurally strong coach. We have a good group of guys here, with strong returners. There’s a lot of support in the community and we have great ownership, too. Ryan does a great job here.”
The afternoon saw another trip to AEI Fitness for an off-ice workout session. The players have really enjoyed their time at AEI Fitness this past week with a few noticing the workout plans are specific to their needs.
“It’s an awesome workout because it’s not just about getting a total work out. They are working on specific areas that they know will end up helping us on the ice”, said Aaron Shahin. “It’s a very hockey specific workout. I think guys are already starting to notice it during practice.”
After a solid lunch from Hotel Indigo of pulled pork and baked beans, and some “R & R”, the guys geared up one final time for the night. In the evening practice, there were a good amount of easy moving flow drills and some odd-man rushes.
With it being a lighter practice, it was a good opportunity for the guys to get their feet moving and to focus on the smaller but very important details like tape-to-tape passing, timing, and communication.
Tomorrow the Sentinels have a quick workout at Mill Race Park before their 7 o’clock practice at the Ham. We encourage all of our fans to come out and get an early look at your Indiana Sentinels!
